Top it With a "B"

Last week on the Sew Weekly, our challenge was to embellish and handmade article of clothing. I chose to embroider my hand made LBD from my 10 year reunion.

My “Taking Chances” Little Black Dress
I originally made this dress for my 10 year reunion a couple weeks ago. I needed a little black dress, and this was the perfect occasion to wear one to. I hadn’t embroidered it yet, because I didn’t know if I wanted it embroidered or beaded yet. I was tossing the decision back and forth. I knew how to bead, but didn’t really have the time or patience this past week. I didn’t know how to embroider but my mom does. Thankfully I had her to request some help from. So I did make the dress, but I had help with my embellishing. Thanks mom :) I love you <3
I got the idea of having a “B” on my dress 1. because my name starts with a “B” and 2. Laverne & Shirley! Duh! Laverne was so smart to always have an “L” on her clothes. I have been wanting to embroider a “B” on something of mine for a loooonnnggg time. Now it’s done ;) The stretch poplin polyester I got downtown L.A. at the FIDM Scholarship Store. All fabrics a $1 a yard. No joke my friends. If you are ever in the L.A. area, hit me up, we will go together. This means you especially, Tempest! Coming to Cali and not telling me….Love you anyways! My zipper is also from the FIDM store, I bought 2 bags full for $4! This zipper is really rad. I wish the camera could have shown how radically jeweled it is on the teeth. I used my typical New Look pattern that I used for the Mad Men Challenge and the TV Character Challenge. I altered the neckline, more than I had planned. My self drafted flutter cap didn’t work out the way I had hoped, and I couldn’t seem to keep it on my shoulders. I feel like the early 1990′s has raided my shoulders without the shoulder padding included. I made the hem mid calf to give a more vintage vibe, to truly be called a “little black dress”. If I plan on fixing the neckline and shoulders at all, I will probably add some black lace.
My husband really wanted to take these photos at a particular spot at a particular time of day, or evening I should say. So we went out and waited for the sun to begin to set. These pictures are taken with in the span of 2 hours.
We met another dog on our photog adventure! This is Sophie. She is a terrier/chihuahua mix, and super friendly. Not skittish at all. Thank you Hector for allowing Sophie to be in our photos and online. She is a beauty! We love meeting new dogs everywhere we go. I’m still getting used to people watching me pose….and it’s still awkward. But hey, I just turned 29, and as an ode to the last year of my 20′s I have “labeled” the year, the “Year of No Fear”, taking chances every where I go people, so watch out, here I come.

This looks fantastic! I love that the embroidery spices up the look of the black dress so much, and like you, I've always wanted to put my monogram on something a la Laverne and Shirley! It turned out beautifully - well done!
